Patio Installation in North London & Hertfordshire

North Landscaping and Driveways designs and installs patios across North, Northwest and West London and Hertfordshire. We lay porcelain, Indian sandstone, natural stone and block paving on a compacted sub-base and full mortar bed, with a gentle fall so rainwater drains away from your house.

A good patio extends your living space into the garden. We help you choose the right material and layout for how you will use it — dining, relaxing, or simply a clean, low-maintenance area outside your back doors.

Every patio we lay sits on a compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed, not spot-bedded on dabs of mortar. Porcelain is primed with a slurry primer so it bonds properly, and the whole patio is set to a fall so water runs away from the house instead of pooling.

Patios: common questions

What is the best material for a patio?

Porcelain is the best choice if you want low maintenance — it is frost-proof, resists stains and rarely needs sealing. Indian sandstone is the best choice for a natural, traditional look. Block paving suits patios that need to match a driveway or take heavy use.

How long does it take to lay a patio?

Most patios take 2–4 days. Larger patios, raised patios with steps, or jobs with walls or drainage take longer. We confirm the timeline in your quote.

Is porcelain paving slippery?

Outdoor porcelain is manufactured with an anti-slip surface, so it is not slippery when chosen and laid correctly. Look for an R11 slip rating for outdoor use. Keeping it clean of moss and algae helps too.

Do I need planning permission for a patio?

Usually not. Most ground-level patios in back gardens are permitted development. Raised platforms more than 30cm above the ground can need planning permission, and listed buildings or conservation areas have extra rules.

Why should a patio slope?

A patio needs a gentle fall, typically around 1:60 to 1:80, so rainwater runs away from the house and does not pool on the surface or soak towards the walls.

How do I maintain a patio?

Sweep regularly and wash it down a few times a year. Porcelain only needs a mild detergent. Natural stone benefits from an occasional clean and, optionally, a sealant to resist staining.
