About this project

A clean, modern patio running the full width of the house outside the bi-fold doors, at a home in Borehamwood.

We prepared a compacted sub-base and laid large-format light porcelain on a full mortar bed, using levelling spacers so every slab sits flat and the joints stay perfectly even. The patio is set to a gentle fall so rainwater runs away from the house and the doors.

Large-format porcelain suits a space like this: fewer joints give a sleek, uncluttered look that carries the line of the bi-fold doors out into the garden. It is frost-proof, stain-resistant and very low maintenance, so the patio will stay looking like this with little more than a sweep and a wash.

About this porcelain patio project

Why use levelling spacers when laying porcelain?

Large porcelain slabs need to sit perfectly flat with even joints. Levelling spacers hold each slab at the same height and spacing while the mortar bed sets, which avoids lips between slabs and keeps the joints straight.

Is porcelain a good choice for a patio outside bi-fold doors?

Yes. Large-format porcelain gives a clean, modern finish that suits bi-fold doors, and it is frost-proof, stain-resistant and low maintenance. Outdoor porcelain is anti-slip rated, and it should be laid with a gentle fall away from the doors so water drains off.

How long does a porcelain patio take to install?

Most patios take 2–4 days. Larger patios, or ones with steps or walls, take longer. We confirm the timeline in your quote.
