Resin bound (permeable)
Aggregate is fully mixed with resin and trowelled smooth. Water drains through, there are no loose stones, and it is the option we recommend for driveways.
North Landscaping and Driveways installs resin bound driveways, paths and patios across North, Northwest and West London and Hertfordshire. Resin bound surfaces are a mix of natural aggregate and UV-stable resin, hand-trowelled over a solid base to give a smooth, permeable, low-maintenance finish.

Resin bound driveways have a smooth, seamless finish with no loose stones, no weeds through the joints and very little maintenance. Because water drains straight through the surface, a resin bound driveway laid on a permeable base can help you avoid planning permission on a front garden.
The finish is only as good as the base underneath. We check whether your existing tarmac or concrete is sound enough to overlay; if it is cracked, uneven or poorly drained, we build a new base first so cracks do not come through the resin later.

Stones are scattered onto a resin-coated surface, giving a textured gravel look. It is not permeable, so it is less suited to front driveways.
A block paved edge frames the resin and gives a crisp, durable finish where it meets lawns, paths and kerbs.
Resin works just as well for garden paths, patios and front steps, so the whole property can match.

Resin bound means the stones are fully mixed with resin and trowelled smooth, so the surface is permeable and has no loose gravel. Resin bonded means stones are scattered onto a layer of resin, which gives a rougher texture and is not permeable. For driveways, resin bound is usually the better choice.
Usually not, as long as the resin bound surface is laid on a permeable base so rainwater drains through it. A non-permeable front driveway over 5 square metres that drains onto the road would need planning permission in England.
Sometimes. Resin can go over existing tarmac or concrete if it is sound, level and well-drained. If the base is cracked or moving, the cracks will show through the resin, so we will recommend a new base instead.
As a guide, you can usually walk on it after around 6–8 hours and drive on it after roughly 24–72 hours, depending on temperature. We give you exact timings for your job on the day.
Sweep it regularly and jet wash it once or twice a year on a low setting. Clean up oil or fuel spills promptly. There are no joints for weeds to grow through, so it needs very little else.
