Crazy Paving to Resin Driveway in St Albans
An old, uneven crazy-paving driveway in St Albans replaced with a smooth golden resin surface and a block paving edge.

About this project
This front driveway in St Albans was laid in old crazy paving that had cracked and become uneven, with the edges breaking up along the lawn and hedge. It runs from the pavement up to the garage, so it takes daily foot and car traffic.
We removed the old crazy paving and prepared a solid base before laying a golden aggregate resin surface. A block paving edge finishes the resin where it meets the lawn and the planted border, giving a clean, durable line that stops the surface from breaking up at the sides.
Resin is a good fit for a driveway like this: it gives a smooth, seamless finish with no loose stones and no joints for weeds, and a resin bound surface laid on a permeable base lets rainwater drain straight through — useful on a front driveway, where drainage affects whether planning permission is needed.
The result is a completely different first impression from the street, with a surface that needs little more than an occasional sweep and wash.
About this resin driveway project
Can crazy paving be replaced with a resin driveway?
Yes. Old crazy paving is too uneven and loose to lay resin over, so we remove it and prepare a solid new base first. Laying resin straight over a failing surface means the cracks soon show through.
Do I need planning permission for a resin driveway in St Albans?
Usually not. In England, a new front driveway over 5 square metres only needs planning permission if it is non-permeable and drains onto the road. A resin bound surface on a permeable base drains through, so it normally avoids this. St Albans has many conservation areas, so if your property is in one, check with St Albans City and District Council first — we can advise.
How long does a resin driveway installation take?
Most resin driveways take a few days. The time depends mainly on whether a new base is needed — replacing old crazy paving like this one means removing the old surface and building a new base before the resin goes down.
