About this project

This driveway in Borehamwood sits above the lawn, so it needed retaining along one side. We excavated the area, installed a drainage channel to deal with surface water, and built up a compacted sub-base ready for paving.

A brick dwarf wall retains the raised driveway along the lawn side, so the edge stays firm and the paving cannot spread or sink into the garden. The surface is laid in brindle block paving, whose warm, varied tones suit the brick of the house and hide everyday marks well.

Block paving is a practical choice for a driveway like this: it is strong enough for daily parking, and if a block is ever damaged it can be lifted and replaced on its own.

The finished driveway is level, well drained and neatly finished against the wall, lawn and pavement.

About this block paving driveway project

Why build a dwarf wall alongside a driveway?

When a driveway sits higher than the garden next to it, a dwarf wall retains the edge so the sub-base and blocks cannot spread or sink into the lawn. It also gives a neat, finished line.

Do you install driveways in Borehamwood?

Yes — Borehamwood is our home base, so we work there regularly, along with nearby Radlett, Bushey and Potters Bar. Planning questions for driveways in Borehamwood go to Hertsmere Borough Council.

How long does a block paving driveway with a wall take?

A block paving driveway typically takes 3–5 days. Building a retaining wall adds time, as the wall needs to be built before the paving goes down. We confirm the full timeline in your quote.
