Herringbone Brick Garden Path in Watford
A characterful brick path in Watford, laid in herringbone with soldier-course edging between the lawn and a planted border.

About this project
A garden path in Watford with more character than standard slabs, running between the lawn and a planted border.
We laid multi-tone bricks in a herringbone pattern with a soldier-course edge on each side, set on a prepared base so the path stays firm and level. The edging gives a crisp line against the lawn on one side and the planted border on the other, and stops the herringbone from spreading.
Herringbone is one of the strongest brick patterns because the bricks interlock, and the mix of tones gives the path a traditional, established look that will weather in beautifully over time.

About this garden path project
Why lay a brick path in herringbone?
Herringbone interlocks the bricks, which makes the path stronger and less likely to shift than a straight stretcher pattern. It also gives a classic, characterful look that suits traditional gardens.
What is a soldier-course edge?
A soldier course is a row of bricks laid on end along the edge of a path. It frames the pattern, gives a clean line against lawns and borders, and holds the herringbone in place.
